Krobo and fanti born singer, Belinda Nana Akua Amoah is one of the three special front cover on the first edition of the DUST (the other two are Mensa and Wanlov the Kubolor), an informative and interactive magazine. Dust is a new magazine about Accra, by Accra, for Accra.
Answering questions about her dressing when performing on stage, Mzbel told DUST “What I wear on stage is strictly for show business. You know? When I’m on stage, its like I’m in my office and I have to wear my uniform”.
She plays down the call for her to wear something not revealing especially when she is on stage. “If I come on stage in African fabric and I can’t move, people will say I’m confused. I don’t want to look like the people who came to see me; I want to look different, like an artist. I want to entertain. That’s exactly what I do and people always complain”.
She further said “You don’t expect a doctor or the nurse to be wearing what you want them to. They wear their uniforms when they are in the hospital and remove it when they are not. When you go to the beach you can’t say ‘because I’m an African, I will wear kaba and slit to swim. This is not our culture so I will wear batakari to swim’.
“People will think you are crazy! You will wear the bikini even though its showing your thigns, your boobs and your back. You will wear it because that’s the costume made for swimming. Period. When I’m on stage, it’s the same. I am Mzbel, I like to be comfortable and I like to move. And they love it”.
The saucy girl nearly gave up on music after the robbery incident which reminded her of her dark side of fame. “I almost gave up, you know? I can direct and edit and do production. I thought maybe I should just buy some computers, set up a multimedia company and forget about music”.
But little encouragement from friends and family made her change her mind to stick with music. “But I get encouragement from people saying, when are you coming out with a new album? We love your song” she said Dust magazine.
Though Mzbel has frozen as far as the Ghana Music Awards is concerned, she is aiming higher and hoping to be nominated for honours outside Ghana.
“I am hoping to be nominated for awards outside Ghana”.
Mzbel likes Efya (Jane Awindor) and looking forward in collaborating with her as well as her fellow DUST cover stars; Wanlov and Mensa.
Mzbel is the last of seven girls and she is closely supported by her family.
Mzbel has four albums to her credit, ‘Awoso Me’, ‘16 years’, ‘E Dey Be’ and the current one ‘Saucy Girl’.
