Last Saturday at the Silverbird Cinema in Accra, well wishers were taken down memory lane as they remembered staying up late in those days to watch Azumah Nelson do what he knows how to do best in the boxing ring; which is beating people. The legendary boxer Azumah Nelson was celebrated. Born in Bukom, Accra in 1958, Azumah Nelson was WBC World Champion for over a decade and was arguably the greatest boxer to come out of Africa.
For 11 solid years, Azumah Nelson has been torturing opponents, not only beating them like the father like son fashion but also terrorizing their life in the ring. Only few stood their grounds against the boxing professor in the ring.
A nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for. In this country, heroes die before they are remembered or celebrated. The cost of the project in Akuse is estimated at USD$23,444,960 to Athletic tracks, Swimming Pools, Basketball & Tennis Courts, Chapel, Dining Hall, Primary & Secondary Schools, Sports Medical Centre, Student Hostels, Staff Apartments.
The boxing professor had a staggering 11 years career with a total of 47 fights. He won 39 by knockout decision and 28; he lost 6 fights with 2 draws. Azumah Nelson was selected to the international boxing hall of fame boxing hall of fame on January 8, 2004 and inducted in June the same year.
The documentary was written and Produced by Atlanta-based Ghanaian filmmaker Sam A Kessie. It was narrated by Ashley Morrison and sponsored by Geodrill and The Azumah Nelson Foundation.
To climax a beautiful night, some of the DVDs auctioned. It was well patronized.
