Ghana Music Awards 2010: Flash Back As We Wait For Tommorrow

Tomorrow 10th April, 2010 at the Dome in the Accra International Conference. The whole country’s attention will be on the Ghana Music Awards 2010. Below are records and videos of artistes who have been crowned as winners in the previous editions of the Ghana Music Awards.

The overall winner was initially ‘Most Popular Song of the Year’ before it was changed to ‘Artiste of the Year’. Enjoy the videos and little information about the artistes, as we wait for who will succeed the rap doctor Okyeame Kwame.

2000: Daddy Lumba with Aben Wo Ha

Daddy Lumba

In 2000, the first edition of the Ghana Music Awards, Daddy Lumba or DL known in life as Charles Kwadwo Fosu’s ‘Aben Wo Ha’ won him three awards including best album and the most popular song. He debuted on the scene in the 1980s with a massive hit “Yeeye Aka Akwantuo Mu” with Nana Acheampong. He introduced Ofori Amponsah in his ‘Wo Ho Kyere’ album in 1999.

2001: Kojo Antwi with Tom and Jerry

Kojo Antwi

Known as the maestro, real name Julius Kojo Antwi started his musical career playing with Boomtalents, he then became the front man of Classique Handels later Classique Vibes. He has had series of awards and hits in any Music charts around the country with any album he has released, nonstop airplays, TV shows in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo, Senegal and United Television Network of Africa, tells how fast his career is gaining grounds to cover Africa as a whole. In 2001, his album and title track ‘Tom and Jerry’ won him the second edition of the Ghana Music Awards.

2002: Lord Kenya with Medo

Lord Kenya

Kokooko, a track he featured on Daasebre Gyamenah’s album became an instant hit because of its fantastic rap. He was born Abraham Philip Akpor Kojo Kenya but they call him Lord Kenya known as Ghana’s Rap Heavyweight. He released his debut album Sika Card which instantly became one of the nation’s hits due to its musical appeal as well as the depth of the lyrics. He ruled Ghana Music Award 2002 with his ‘Medo’ track featuring Swanzy B on the Yesom Sika album.

2003: Kontihene with Aketesia

Nana Kontihene or Emmanuel Nana Appiah Boateng’s ‘Aketesia’ won the top honour at the 2003 Ghana Music Awards for him. His name Kontihene is the title given to the money chief or sika hene in Akan Traditional circles. He is believed to be the first hiplife artiste to be featured by Kojo Antwi’s ‘Me Die Ne Woa’ song (Densu album) and Mr. Music man helped him record his second album (Nsoroma).

2004: VIP’s Ahomka Womu

VIP

In 2004 at the Ghana Music Awards, VIP, a rap trio, made up of Abdul Hamidu Ibrahim (Lazzy), Emmanuel Promzy Ababio (Promzy) and Joseph Nana Ofori (Prodigal), Nima based artistes with their “Ahomka Womu” song, won several awards such as “Artiste of the Year”, “Song of the Year”, “Hiplife Artiste of the Year”, “Hiplife Song of the Year” and “Hiplife Album of the Year”. The same song also won the “Best Music Video Directing”, which went to Felix Dakat.

2005: Obour’s Konkotiba

Obour

Obour’s real name is Bice Osei Kuffuor. He created a niche for himself in 2001 with his Atenteben album. He has gone on to churn out hits upon hits and still remains vibrant in the game. Obour has embarked on various campaigns of national interest. He collaborated with A. B. Crenstil on a music project dubbed ‘Best of the Lifes’. His ‘Konkotiba’ song featuring Samini on the ‘Atumpan’ album was adjudged as the overall winner at the 2005 Ghana Music Awards.

2006: Ofori Amponsah’s Otoolege

Ofori Amponsah

Ofori Amponsah often referred to as All4Real. He was introduced by Daddy Lumba in 1999 on his ‘Wo Ho Kyere’ album, he has since stepped out of Lumba’s shadow before releasing his debut ‘Asew’. He has also collaborated with Kofi Nti, Richie Rich and Barosky. He does mostly love songs earning him the nickname ‘ladies man’. Album and title track ‘Otoolege’ was the popular song from 2005 to 2006. All4Real crowned the good year by winning most honours at the Ghana Music Awards in 2006.

2007: Batman (Now Samini)’s Odo

Samini

Samini formally Batman (Best of All Time MAN) was born Emmanuel Andrews Samini in Wa. He came into the limelight and highly sought after featuring on Kokoveli’s Zaa-za and K.K. Fosu’s Suudwe. In 2004, he released his own album called Dankwansere where critics wondered if he could succeed on his own. Dankwansere, Twi for bat, went on to dominate local charts and won him many awards. He has constantly being in the international scene and won some awards. His Odo track on his second album ‘Samini’ stole the Ghana Music Awards 2007.

Kwaw 'Abodam' Kese

2008: Kwaw Kese’s Odiem

The man insane Kwaw ‘Abodam’ Kese was born Emmanuel Abrompah Botchwey from Agona Swedru. Discovered and groomed by Hammer of the Last 2. He wrote ‘Oye Nonsense’ which was featured on Obrafour’s Execution Diary compilation. The track stirred some controversy, it was believed that Oye Nonsense was dissing song which was linked to Kontihene’s Mi Gi Zi Gi. Abodam was given another slot on Hammer’s Sounds of our Time, another compilation, this time around with the track ‘Kwakwa’ and the rest they say is history. In 2008, he ‘abodaminized’ the Ghana Music Awards with his ‘Odiem’ track.

2009: Okyeama Kwame’s Woso

Rap Doctor

Born Kwame Nsiah Appau but known in hip life circles as ‘Rap Doctor’ was a former member of the hip life duo, Akyeame. Okyeame Kwame has become one of the most respected and sought-after hiplife artistes. With a name like ‘Best Rapper Alive’, he is envied by his colleagues. He has been smiling a lot since his breakaway from the group in 2004. He got married to his beautiful wife, also a father with a lot of endorsement deals. He is a fantastic rapper who won Artiste of the Year, Hip Hop Song of the Year and Hiplife / Hiphop Artiste(s) of the Year at the 2009 Ghana Music with the track ‘Woso’ on his M’awensem album. His video for the song also won the Best Video of the Year; it was directed by Abraham Ohene Djan of OM Studious.
