Ghana Movie Awards 2011: Which Movies Do You Think Will Make The Final Nomination List?

To be honest with ourselves, aside the few things retarding the advancement of the growing Ghana Movie Industry, it’s an undeniable fact that 2011 [though not yet over] saw many movies being churned out on regular basis.

From where I’m standing and my job as an entertainment journalist offered me the opportunity to see most movies at press/media previews before they are eventually premiered to the general public and subsequently released onto the market for consumption.

I must in all sincerity confess that, I really saw some great movies produced in Ghana this year. I want to play it fair here and not mention a particular movie/s. If I do, it will derail the purpose of this write-up, which is to get the readers to guess their own movies and to be fair to other movies that from my perspective are nothing to write home about.

All too soon, another Ghana Movie Awards will take place on Christmas Day, December 25, 2011 at the Accra International Conference to acknowledge and award personalities in the country’s movie industry who have expelled in the year.

With more movies released in the year consisting of the ‘said’ 80 percent adoption stories, it will be interesting how the final nominations of the awards will look like. The 80 percent adoption stories can be disputed and it’s neither here or there since every story has been told before.

The final nominations of the 2011 Ghana Movie Awards will be unveiled to the press and general public in November at Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi, Ashanti Region. Even before that day, I believe movie enthusiasts are keeping their fingers crossed.

Now let’s get talking and guessing. From the movies you have watched this year, which one do you sincerely think merits nominations in this year’s awards.

On the flip side, where do you think the Best Actor and Best Actress Award will go?

Two of Ghana’s finest and talented Hiplife artistes; Okyeame Kwame and Obrafour are set to renew their rivalry at the Ghana Music & Food Festival, an event created for Ghanaians to enjoy the very best of Ghanaian dishes and celebrate the best of indigenous Ghanaian music at one place.

The two brilliant rappers have not shared the same stage after the release of the controversial song in which the latter questioned the former’s credibility and mocked him for referring to himself as the ‘Best Rapper Alive’.

The organizers of the history-making event dubbed, the ‘Ghana Music & Food Festival’ are set to make history by putting the two rappers on the stage to perform to the patrons and their fans at the maiden edition of the festival. Judgement time as to who is the best?

The pageant also seeks to create job opportunities for the winners with automatic slots in ‘Ghallywood’ movies. No audition will be required from them.

The event will be officially launched in the coming weeks after which auditions will be held inGhana(Southern and Northern sector) to pick 12 finalists. The grand finale is slated for December 2011.

The Battle Of The Sexes: Who Is Best At Keeping Secrets: Men Or Women?

I live in an area where I frequently see women quarrel and fight each other because the other person has revealed certain secrets to others. These women fight both verbally and physically on normal basis.
Do the above tell you about the inability of women to keep secrets?
A story was told of a white man and a black man who were business partners. The former resides in Europe whiles the latter operates from Africa. The white man didn’t trust the African, so he went through several means to find out how genuine and honest the black man was to the work.
He needed to find out how committed and honest the black man is to his work before he commits himself fully to the business. After several tries, he was told that, one of the ways to find out vital information from a man is when he’s drunk.

As a man, I believe the above to a little extent. The white man arranged for a meeting with his opposite man at a nearby bar and made sure the black man had enough drink. The rest they say is history.

This also tells us that, men too sometimes can’t hold their mouth when alcohol gets into their system.

Women are quick to defend themselves and attack men for not keeping secrets when in actual fact anytime women gather around, all they do is to open people’s secrets and share among themselves.

Men on the other hand, will talk about varied things; such as alcohol, girls and sports. However, I still believe women are best at keeping secrets.

You can go ahead and doubt me but don’t forget it’s possible the man you have known and been calling ‘dad’ perhaps might not be your real dad and your mum is the best person to tell you why.

So the question is; Who Is Best At Keeping Secrets: Men Or Women?

The Ghana Music and Food Festival [GHMFF] is an upcoming event with sole aim of creating a big platform for Ghanaians to congregate at one venue; Ghana International Trade Fair Centre, La – Accra to celebrate their music and food.
The GHMFF which promises to be an exciting event Ghanaians will look out for every year was earlier slated for October 1, 2011 but after several meetings between the organisers and the various government ministries involved agreed that, the one day event was not enough to champion the aim of the event.

The maiden edition of the GHMFF has therefore been moved from October 1, 2011 to October 28, 29, 30. On the 28th October which happens to be a Friday, there will be a ‘Happy Hour’. Various activities have been earmarked for that day.
On Saturday, 29th October, the event itself. The venue will be divided into three (3) stands to cater for the main music genre inGhana. Each stand will have its own activities.

Who Owns A Movie? Is It The Scriptwriter, The Director Or The Producer?

Is it fair to give the ownership of a movie to the man [Producer/Executive Producer] with the financial power? Or should it go to the man [Director] who directed the movie, the person who narrated the story to the scriptwriter to develop or the ownership should belong to the scriptwriter who transformed the story to a script?

After my acting course and years as a member of several stage acting groups, it taught me that, movie production is a tiring and demanding venture. I was also taught that, it’s a field that requires the services of many professionals. No one has been able to make a movie single-handedly as far as I know.

Just last weekend, two personalities in Ghana; one a known music-producer –now-turned-a-movie-producer and, an award winning scriptwriter cum costume professional were involved in a needless argument where they displayed how childish some grown up can be on radio.

What they displayed on radio was unintelligent but before I go into what triggered their bust-up. Let me try to throw in some bit of education on here: Only a story cannot make a movie and without a story, there can’t be a movie. This means that, a story is required to be developed into a script to make a movie.

Now back to the two personalities. The first person said he narrated a story to be developed into a script, hence claiming the movie is his. Also the other party argued that, she developed the story into a script, meaning the movie is hers. I doubt if any of them thought about the director and the producer.

Even when a story is turned into a script, a director and a producer are needed to make a movie. The Director directs the casts on set whiles the Producer or the Executive Producer takes care of the finances.

Aside the other esteemed professionals needed to complete a movie; it appears that, the aforementioned folks play integral part in movie making… So the question is: Who then owns a movie? What do you think?

If the story narrator and scriptwriter can fight needless about the ownership of a movie, can the cameraman or the light man also claim ownership because they rolled the camera and lighted the set for the movie?

Can Destiny’s Child Sue Ghanaian Movie Makers Over The ‘Destiny’s Child’ Movie?

In a tête-à-tête with a colleague entertainment journalist last weekend, we dissected on various issues which have bedevilled the Ghanaian Entertainment Industry. We talked extensively about movies and proliferation of awards here and there on the African continent.
I was particularly shocked when it came out that indeed all is not rosy in the make believe fraternity. Though we are in the third quarter of 2011, it appears that over 80 percent of movies produced this year inGhanaare either adopted or copied stories from mostly foreign productions.
Though this canker is unfortunate, it seems to have etched itself in the Ghana Movie Industry. This phenomenal of blindly copying has taken a new turn as most movie makers now sample three or more foreign movies and add them together to make them one complete Ghanaian movie. By so doing, scriptwriters’ jobs have been taken away from them. This has retarded the flow of creativity.

Sometimes I reminisce and miss the good old days when movies produced had no misgivings about them. Stories were told with so much maturity without anyone doubting the originality of the story. Several years ago, there weren’t any issues withAfricamovie makers plagiarising other people works. Even if there was any, I believed whoever the original storyteller was, was acknowledged.

However, new sets of film makers on the African continent are lazy. Bunch of lazy folks who disregard the need to be creative.
Let’s look at the new movie ‘Destiny’s Child’ which is on the editing bench. When GhanaCelebrities.Com revealed the movie titled ‘Destiny’s Child’ in a post, many tabloids as well as movie enthusiasts all over Africa slammed the production house for its lack of innovation in copying a brand which has already been established and known all over the world.
Whiles some questioned the choice of the title, others were of the opinion that, perhaps the storyline will be centred on the lifestyles of the former Destiny Child group members. Some members of the Destiny’s Child group broke away since they weren’t able to deal with the internal conflict that beleaguered the group which eventually led to the group’s split-off. Coincidentally, the plot of the movie appears to have certain resemblance with the group’s break up story.

Before they finally called it quit, the group were left with three members; Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Interestingly, the ‘Destiny’s Child’ movie is a story about three sisters; Chalyne [Helen Asante], Nana Akua [Nana Akua Addo] and Denise [Roselyn Ngissah] who loved music and began their musical career at young ages. They performed and danced at various venues inAccrato make a living.
They were signed on a record label after taking part in competition, though they didn’t win. Shortly, they were faced with several problems as to which of them; Nana Akua and Denise was the leader of the group. Just like the original Destiny’s Child, one member of the group moved away and was replaced by another member.

At this juncture, taking into consideration, the story of the group Destiny Child and the storyline of the movie, can we say it’s a clear case of brand thievery on the part of the Ghanaian movie maker; since the name; Destiny’s Child is an already established brand?

Though the American based R&B, Soul, Hip Hop and Pop group, Destiny’s Child might not be together as a group, I doubt if indeed, they are aware of a Ghanaian movie about them. Even if they are aware can they sue the Writer, Executive Producer as well as the production house responsible for the movie; Hau Of Kadewe Films?
If they couldn’t deal with their difference and allowed internal conflicts to break them apart, how will they come together to sue? Will they even waste their time on a poverty-stricken industry?

Indeed, brand thievery or plagiarism has been accepted and embraced in movie making on the African continent. It’s neitherGhananorNigeriathing; it’s a problem with Africans.

Africans like to plagiarist someone else work without giving credits. From where I’m standing, I don’t think it’s going to end anytime soon, if the original people don’t sue but then what is there inAfricato warrant such a move?

All the same, if you cannot tell your own story, I guess someone will tell it for you…GhanaCelebrities.Com in the weeks ahead will be interviewing the cast and crew of the upcoming Ghanaian movie ‘Destiny Child’ to look at the similarities if any and the distinctions between the story the movie tells and the Beyonce and co’s Destiny Child story.

We can’t wait to have the finished product to be able to look at it critically with our eagle eye. We heard it will be another African blockbuster though!

It’s Official: Ghana Music Awards Is Now ‘Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Festival’

Charter House, the organisers of the annual Ghana Music Awards said goodbye and farewell to MTN, their long standing headline sponsor for the Ghana Music Awards at Citizen Kofi in Accra yesterday.

MTN has been replaced with Vodafone as the new sponsor of the awards. According to the organisers, Vodafone has showed its readiness and loyalty to the growth of the Ghana Music Industry, hence the reason why, they will be headlining the awards, commencing 2012.

Mrs. Theresah Ayaode, the Executive Director of the awards, thanked MTN, who has sponsored the awards for close to a decade. She conceded that, indeed, the interest and investment made by MTN to the brand over the years added value to the franchise and acknowledged that, that has brought the awards this far.

With the sponsorship baton handed over to Vodafone; the awards will be now known as ‘Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Festival’. The network known for its great and catchy commercials comes in at a time when the whole entire awards process and content is being looked at critically.

To start the overhauling, all Ghana Music Awards Committees; Categorization, Nomination, Selection and Planning Committees will be dissolved pending review.

Also, a technical committee comprising of objective and knowledgeable practitioners in the industry will be constituted to undertake certain jobs such as (1) Review the Ghana Music Awards Categories. (2) Review the entire process of nominations and voting and (3) Review and revamp the whole festival content.

The outcome of the reviews will be published for the general public.

Vodafone coming in as the official title sponsors of the much celebrated awards appears to be a step in the right direction. Chief Marketing Officer of Vodafone Ghana, Uche Udofile told the gathering why her company had come on board.

“As one of the most powerful means of communication, we believe we have a lot to contribute to the music and entertainment industry in Ghana. We are excited by the new ideas and concepts Charterhouse have in mind for the Ghana Music Awards – it’s a massive event in the calendar of the music industry and we are pleased to be able to support it. The changes you will see in the GMA next year will create a more vibrant festival with a transparent and fair judging process”.

She later announced the plans of Vodafone setting a foundation dubbed the ‘Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Foundation’.

The foundation will cater for the needs of upcoming musicians and also train and help the pioneers in the industry. She reiterated the fact that, the foundation is just one of the numerous projects, the Ghana Music Awards brand will enjoy from Vodafone.

At Citizen Kofi were some executives of the MUSIGA Union, in the person of out-going president Diana HOpeson, out-going vice Amandzeba Nat Brew, newly president elect Bice Osei Kuffour [Obour], Mark Okraku Mantey, Sammy Forson and a cross section of the media.

Vodafone now appears to be a friendly telecom network to the entertainment industry in Ghana as they recently signed a lucrative three year contract with 4Stye TV to take over the rights of the popular 4STYE TV show on TV3 and eTV Ghana.

They have also bought the rights of the 4Stye Music Video Awards and events associated with the event.
They started the Vodafone Icons: Divas Edition last year which saw trio RNM emerging winners. The second edition of their ‘020 Live’ musical concert also comes in with American R&B crooner Trey Songz headlining the event.
Join GhanaCelebrities.Com to welcome Vodafone! We hope there will be real changes and not just the name.

Buk Bak Is Back!

These days people are in a hurry to churn out ‘rubbish’ they call music.  Now more reasons why I will not hesitate to join the chorus that hip life is dead is the fact that over half of the hip life musicians in Ghana now are bereft of lyrics. A great number of them are talentless.

Thanks to Gyedu Blay Ambolley and Reggie Rockstone for starting rap and hip life respectively in Ghana. If not, most of these ‘confused’ sets of hip life artistes would be pushing trucks around town.
Though some of these ‘confused’ hip lifers should be putting measures in place to protect the genre started many years ago by Reggie Rockstone, they are rather getting themselves more confused and trying hard to create another genre to rebel what we all know as ‘Hip Life’. How confused can the confused and talentless become?
Oopss! Sorry for the little detour. The good news in town is that, hip life trio Buk Bak after many years of breakup have decided to stage a comeback as a group to churn out what Ghanaians have known them for; hits after hits.
Buk Bak before their break up were the only hip life group [stand to be corrected] that churned out more than threehits in their albums. Musicians today are lazy and egoistic. Just a single hit track on their album and it’s enough for them.
GhanaCelebrities.Com has learnt that, the trio are back in Ghana now and plans are far advanced for them to work together again.
Buk Bak started as a three member group made up of Prince Bright [Bling Bling Sparkles]; a versatile rapper, who raps in Ga, Twi and pidgin whiles Shoetan was known for English raps and Ronnie the ragga voiced dude adds his voice to make songs complete . Their songs became instant hits because of their catchy choruses.
After the first album, Shoetan quit the group to continue his studies abroad. Bright, Ronnie went ahead to record albums ‘Awensem’, ‘Sika Kokoo’ and ‘Gold Coast’. After which, they went their separate ways to work on their solo albums.
Bright released his solo with album and hit track ‘Condom’ whiles Ronnie released his ‘Screen Saver’.
Both tracks failed to make the needed impact like a Buk Bak song had done over the years. Their U-turn has been described by some connoisseurs of the music fraternity as sweet welcoming news.
The trio had hit songs such as ‘Gonja Barracks’, ‘Komi Ke Kena’, ‘Klu Blofo’, ‘Chingilingi’, ‘Kelewele’, ‘Trotro’, ‘Dienpo’, ‘Akwasi Broni’, ‘Tankase’, ‘U 4 Know’, ‘Kakatsofa’, ‘Kakalika’, ‘Twen Me’, ‘Akwele Ke Akuokor’, ‘Yenko Ne Brebre’, ‘Ma Me Odo’, ‘Kululu’, ‘Bibini Ba’, ‘Helepu’ among others.

Ghana’s Big Brother Amplified Rep Alex Biney Stars In A Movie ‘Sons Of Satan’!

One of Ghana’s representatives to the recent Big Brother reality Tv show ‘BB Amplified’-Alex Biney has just finished shooting his scenes in the latest movie from controversial movie maker and CEO of Movie Africa Productions, Socrate Sarfo.
Alex who is also known by many as ‘Bomaye’, a name he got while in the Big Brother house has said that, he is ready to grab any opportunity thrown at him.
It appears he didn’t slack in grabbing the opportunity to star alongside Fred Amugi, Vivian Achor, Eddie Watsons, Baby Blanche and others in Socrate Safo’s ‘Sons Of Satan’.
GhanaCelebrities.Com was on set. Click here for some of the photos we captured.

Abdul Sallam Mumuni Of Venus Films Banned By The Ministry Of Information & Film Regulatory Council!

Movie producer Alhaji Abdul Sallam Mumuni and CEO of movie power house, Venus Films Productions has been banned for a month whiles two others; Double D Production and Diamond Films have been fined.
Abdul Sallam, the man, who many believe masterminded the infamous ban of actress Yvonne Nelson, was banned by the Ministry of Information and the Film Regulatory Council for going against the standard directives – which is to release a classified movie.
Sallam went against the directives by releasing a different movie ‘Dirty Secret’ to the market – different from what was classified. ‘Dirty Secret’ has scenes of soft porn, homosexuality coupled with strong vulgar language. It’s a movie not suitable for certain segement of the public.
For his punishment Sallam was slapped with a year ban but the Film Producers Association of Ghana [FIPAG] pleaded on his behalf hence his ban was reduced from one year to one month with GHC2.000 fine.
It will be interesting to see how Sallam will cope with this ban, especially when he is one of the busiest producers in Ghana. I reckon the one month ban will be like a whole year to him.
Two others, Double D and Diamond Films were also fined 100 pounds each for faulting the same directives.

Kofi Adjorlolo Takes The Film Producers Associations Of Ghana & The Ghana Actors Guild To The Cleaners. He Says “I’m Pissed & Peeved”!

Though his infamous ‘ban’ by the Film Producers Associations of Ghana [FIPAG] has been lifted, talented and creative Ghanaian actor Kofi Adjorlolo is not a happy person at all.

The versatile actor was among three movie stars banned for fouling the directives of the Film ProducersAssociation. The actor still finds the ‘supposed’ reason for his ban laughable.
I was banned for two years though that didn’t actually stopped me from doing what I know how to do best. When I was banned, I kept asking myself what have I done and they said I was trying to protect the Nigerians working in Ghana – so I should not have even talked on their behave which was very ridiculous though.”
“But all of a sudden, they started taking action against me. I didn’t retort. I didn’t talk back. They went on and on and later came back to say, they have lifted the ban after we had sat down to talk.” He said surprisingly.
Even though the ban has been lifted, Kofi remains an unhappy man because he wasn’t served with a letterstating reasons for his ban.
I was not served with any letter. I don’t even know why I was banned. Until today, there have been nothing like meeting me to tell me the reason why I was banned. I’m not happy though about. I’m not happy at all.”
In all indication Kofi has not forgiven the people that masterminded his ban. It looks like the actor still holds some grudges with some officials of the Producers’ Association as well as the Executives of the Ghana Actors Guild [GAG], the body set aside to regulate activities of actors/actresses inGhanaheaded by the President Samuel Odoi Mensah.
In an interview with GhanaCelebrities.Com, the actor who picked the ‘Favourite Actor’ of the Year at the last year’s Ghana Movie Awards revealed why he is pissed and peeved in the movie industry.
Explaining his problem with Actors Guild to GhanaCelebrities.Com, Kofi said, he didn’t feel the impact of the Guild when the news of his ban broke out. He felt the Ghana Actors Guild should have intervened. “I’m a member of the Ghana Actors Guild but unfortunately the Guild didn’t do anything to help me when I was banned”.
As a member of the Guild, GhanaCelebrities.Com asked if he consulted the Executives about his plight. He said, he didn’t have to necessarily petition the Guild, instead he expected the Guild to intervene just for the fact that he is a member in good standing.
“I’m a member of the Guild. As a member of the Guild if something happens – the Executives of the Guild – they were aware. They should have called me – administratively. We all have worked in offices. If a complain comes from somewhere that one of your workers [actors] did something and that we [FIPAG] have banned him. You call me – I don’t have to call you as an Executive of the association.”
Kofi reiterated that he felt ignored by his own association. He continued that, he didn’t receive any letter from either FIPAG or GAG prior to his ban and after the ban was lifted hence why he’s pissed and peeved.
“I’m very judicious in my things. I’m very meticulous because I have worked as a broadcaster – as a media man. Nobody has written to me that they have lifted the ban”, adding that, “As I’m talking to you now, I’m not happy at all. I’m so pissed and peeved.”
Talking about other issues, Kofi Adjorlolo commended the organisers of the Ghana Movie Awards.
He said “I’m so elated about the Ghana Movie Awards. In fact, for a very long time, we never had any good movie awards in this country but when it started last year – knowing the people [organizers] involved, seeing them, I realize this people are serious”.
“And true to it, I know this people have something up their sleeves and they will go very far. So my expectation is very positive. It has a future. I believe in the organizers.”
Talking about the ‘needless’ controversy that erupted in the country when four actresses were asked to share one car acquired from sponsors to promote the awards. Kofi said he foresaw the problem especially when the ‘4Play’ movie was submitted to the awards.
He said:  “That was a problem. When you involve yourself in something for the first time, there is bound to be problems and that particular problem, I foresaw it coming being that a lot of movies were forwarded for nominations.
With all these girls [Jackie Appiah, Juliet Ibrahim, Yvonne Okoro and Roselyn Ngissah] performing, I knew ‘4Play’ was one strong movie that could cause sensation as well as controversy and that was exactly what happened. Because the four girls did play very well in that movie and apparently I foresaw that controversy. However, I think they are working to iron out things.”
When asked if it’s okay for two people to win one award. Kofi said, “This is my personal view; I don’t think its okay. It’s not right but don’t forget it depends on how the citation goes so far as the award is concerned because I know award like Noble Peace Prize – two people can share it.”
Asked if he shares the sentiment that, Nigerians who come to Ghana to work should be sideline. Kofi said “No, I don’t share that opinion at all, adding that “We can’t sideline anybody from working. Here is an industry that we all share ourselves.
We collaborate all the time. We should you [FIPAG] say you sideline Nigerians? If there are some regulations that you put across or forward, let the people know. If there are things that they must do to keep working – let them know.”
“It’s not just like you get up and say you ban Nigerians from working in Ghana. No. If you have laid down some rules and regulations relating to foreigners working in this country – let them know.” Kofi schooled FIPAG.
Kofi Adjorlolo said his advice to FIPAG was that their modus operandi was incorrect.  “It was a simple advice I gave them because their modus operandi was wrong. How they did the whole thing was not right. It was wrong.”
He ended the interview with “Even I’m not a member of the FIPAG yet I was banned. How?”
